Coaching Youth Football - The Snack Schedule

This is a tough one especially if you are coaching a younger youth football team. My personal opinion is there is no need for a snack before the game or at the half. I am not even a fan of it after the game since the kids are more concerned about getting their food and not listening to the coaches.

We live in a democracy so plan on the kids getting something. The younger the team is the more likely there will snacks. This is where the Team Mom needs to assign a schedule for the families. I try to keep it to just a beverage, like Gatorade and only for AFTER the game. One year I allowed for oranges at half time since the parents thought it would energize the kids. What a nightmare! The kids used more energy pushing each other over to get to the bag of orange slice. No one listened and the player left orange peels all over the place. Half time was spent cleaning the mess made on the field. I have seen some teams have a "party" at half time with all kinds of cookies and other stuff. No way will I allow snacks at half time. If the individual parent gives you a hard time tell them to bring something for their kid and the parent can feed it to them while you speak to the team at half time.

I need to remind myself I am out here for the kids and if snacks are important, then I will try to accommodate that as long as it does not interfere with the coaching.

ACL Protection During Football

The greatest number of ACL injuries occur in July & August. It is obvious that this is the time that football and other contact sports begin, so the chances of injury are greater.

An ACL tear is usually a season ending injury. It accounts for 2% of all NFL injuries , with 20% involving special teams. There is no difference if the field is grass or artificial turf.

Lets look at the knee joint and try to understand why this injury occurs.

There are four major ligaments around the knee joint. These ligaments are designed to stabilize the knee and to control functional range of motion. The ligaments on each side of the knee are referred to as collateral ligaments. The medial collateral is located along the inside of the knee (medial is a reference to the midline of the body). The lateral collateral ligament is located along the outside of the knee. Most football players suffer from medial collateral ligament tears, due to side impact collisions with another player, resulting in stretching or tearing of this ligament.

Right in the middle of the knee there's two ligaments that hold the whole joint together. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) & the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). The ACL is the more important of the two in reference to football injuries. If you tear the ACL completely, your knee is completely unstable and you risk further injury if not attended to.

When the ACL is torn, about 40% of the athletes will usually hear a 'popping sound' and then experiences extreme pain and swelling. One study of college students reported that a college football player has a 16% chance of ACL injury. Almost 50% of athletes who suffer an ACL injury will also have an injury to the meniscus (shock absorbing cartilage in the knee). ACL injuries usually mean players are out for the season. The treatment usually depends on the type of injury, but almost all players will have to go through some type of rehabilitation or even surgery.

A post-operative knee brace or knee immobilizer is sometimes used following injury or surgery.
These braces have adjustable hinges on the side to control range of motion during the healing stages. In many instances, a player will wear a metal or carbon fiber brace after healing, to provide additional support and protection, and prevent recurrence.

Athletes who suffer ACL injuries must seek out medical attention and receive proper treatment to avoid further injury and increased risk of arthritis in the knee joint.

For those of you who think professional football players can be as dumb as tree stumps and still play the game, as long as they are either big and strong, have an arm that can throw a hand grenade from Ohio to California or have a leg that can kick the chrome off of a bumper, you need to think again. Pro football is a very complex sport and unless you've got a good head on your shoulders, you are going to find out the hard way that it isn't simply a matter of being skilled.

Sure, you have to be big and strong, especially if you're going to be a lineman. These guys top the scales and 300 pounds plus and feel like mack trucks when they hit you. Certainly if you're a 90 pound weakling, you're not going to get far in the game of football. And yes, if you have a fantastic arm and can throw a football the length of the field accurately, you'll most likely make a good quarterback, again, provided that you have a head on your shoulder.

Okay, so why the need for brains? Isn't this a rather simple game? Isn't the object of the game to score a goal by either running or passing the football over the goal line? And if that's not simple enough, you can also kick it over if you think you're too far out for a regular score. How hard can this be? Kids in high school play it and some of these kids aren't the brightest bulbs in the bunch.

To answer that question, one has to understand the level at which pro football is played. These players ARE the strongest of the strong and the most talented. They have the best arms and legs. When it comes to raw talent, there is none better anywhere. What separates the good players from the great players is how they assimilate the game on an intellectual level. In pro football there are a great number of plays for both offense and defense. Some teams have play books that have well over 100 plays. And they're all used. If the coach calls a play, you better know what it means and how you're supposed to react. That means storing a hundred or more plays in your head. And you thought cramming for an exam was hard. This requires a certain degree of brain power.

Imagine the coach calls a play and you forget which play it is and you miss an assignment or a route or a block. It could mean the difference between scoring and not scoring or the opposition scoring or not scoring. Usually it's mistakes that decide games. By having the plays down cold, you minimize the chance of those mistakes.

So the next time you think that football players are just a bunch of dumb jocks, I suggest you try getting a hold of one of their play books and see if you can learn even half of what's in them.

Why Michael Vick Should Not Start Sunday

Sunday is the first regular season game that Michael Vick will be allowed to play and we will finally get to see him on the field. However, he will not be the starting quarterback. I'm sure we've all heard about his interview and how he expected to return to the NFL and be a starter. This was not specific to the situation he is in now though.

Kevin Kolb deserves to start Sunday over Vick. This is for many reasons. To start, Kolb has been in the organization and on the team longer. He knows the system better and has spent a few years seeing it implemented. Last Sunday, he was given his first opportunity to start. He did not shine, but he did show a lot of potential.

Vick has not played in a regular season game since 2006. He spent limited time on the field in preseason and missed the entire training camp. At the very start of the season, Vick was unable to practice with the team due to the terms of his suspension.

To sum it all up, Vick just isn't ready. Marty Mornhinweg said it himself this week. He believes that Vick is at the physical level he needs to be at but he just isn't ready to manage a football game as a start quarterback yet.

Having him in the position he is makes the most sense for the team. They have a quarterback who knows the system well and is ready for his shot to prove himself. At the same time they have another amazing athlete who can play the quarterback position in a way that defensive coordinators need to develop a whole new game plan for. It's the best of both worlds. Am I saying that Vick won't come in, step back, and fire a ball at some point on Sunday? No, I'm not and I hope he does. This just adds another element to the offense that has to be planned for.

Many people want to see Vick start on Sunday but it's just not going to happen. And it shouldn't.

The decision to split from the lower league was made when the two divisions were unable to reach an agreement about how to distribute money from the leagues between each club. It has been a long-running debate, but the decision was in part fuelled by the economic downturn, with many Serie B clubs facing serious financial difficulties.

It was ultimately put to a vote, with 19 of the 20 Serie A clubs voting for the formation of the new league. Lecce were the only club in the division to vote against it, most likely because of their eventual relegation from the top-flight.

Following the decision to set up the new league, former journalist and head of Italy's employers' association Maurizio Beretta was instated as President of the division, and will be responsible for setting up the competition.

Top-flight clubs in Italy will be hoping that the proposed new league can bring Italy success similar to that which has graced the English Premier League since it's separation from the Football League in 1992.

One major difference between the two leagues at present is the way in which television revenue is distributed between teams. In England, the money is split evenly between every club, meaning that each one will receive an equal fixed sum. In Italy however, it is the current Serie A clubs' responsibility to sell their own broadcasting rights to a set of designated channels. But next year, Italy is set to revert back to the collective selling of TV rights.

It of course remains to be seen whether the formation of Italy's new premier division can give a much needed boost to Italian football, but if engineered in the correct manner, the move could well prove to be the building blocks of success in calcio's revival.

Let me use a football metaphor to illustrate what it means to have the right posture.

Barry Switzer was one of the most successful college football coaches of all time. After coaching the University of Oklahoma to several national titles, he also took the Dallas Cowboys to an NFL Superbowl and championship.

What you may not know about Barry is that at Oklahoma, he was probably known as a better recruiter than he was a coach. Most of the stars at OU were from Texas during Switzer's reign. He was known for getting some of the best players in the state of Texas to come to Oklahoma. How did he do that? He had the right posture.

Legend has it that Barry would tell a potential recruit, "If you come to OU, we will be playing on TV a lot, playing in major bowl games, and competing for national championships. If you don't come to OU, we will be on TV a lot, playing in major bowl games and competing for national championships!"

Note the posture he had? Switzer was telling the potential recruit that he knew his team would be a major force either way. That made many of the Texas stars want to work with Barry and his staff at OU!

Can you have that same or similar posture in your business recruiting efforts? You can if you have an unlimited number of folks to talk to. You don't want to be arrogant about it, but you should be able to let folks know that your team is going places. Do they want to watch from the sidelines, or come along for the ride? This should permeate your marketing materials, and everything you do to promote your biz.

You don't want dead weight either. Some of your team mates will turn out that way. We just keep looking for winners. Being consistent with your marketing will help you find them. You just have to have the right posture!

Prescription For Joy - A Domestic Violence Survivor's Tale

There was time in my life when I was called "Dr. D" more than anything else, not mom or even JoAnn. I was teaching about 90 students per semester at a small university tucked in the Allegheny Mountains, two hours away from the nearest major city. That's how it was in my "Wellness and Society" class, with mostly senior Sociology or Criminal Justice majors whom I had known for 3 or 4 years. They casually called me Dr. D and some even shortened it to just plain 'doc' which I secretly loved.

I had created this class specifically for this set of students, who I felt especially close to. Many of them were my advisees, so I knew them fairly well and knew how stressed out they were at the tender young age of 21. It genuinely worried me how tense these students were and I wanted to give them a class that offered them practical solutions. In this class, I wanted to expose them to some of the techniques that I had tried over a 20 period, as well as give them the newest information on alternative health options and nutrition. Our class was small, only 10 students, and was comprised mostly of discussion, experiential learning, and field trips.

In this class, they experienced yoga, breathwork, meditation, music therapy, acupuncture, Reiki, massage, ionic foot cleansing, and a myriad of other new and old techniques that alleviate stress and I secretly hoped, would create more joy in their lives. Joy is the best antidote to stress that I know of.

It was fall and heading into an early cold winter. I knew from experience that this is when some of my students would begin to become despondent. They felt isolated up there on that mountain campus, with constant lake-effect snow. The incessant darkness would bear down on their spirits. I knew how it felt because I had succumbed to the depression myself in past years; the dark days become relentless.

I watched with dismay as many of my students sank into a seasonally affected state of mild depression. This year, I really wanted to give them some tools to stave off the potential misery that accompanies the long months of winter. So, each week, I cheerfully presented to them more ideas and gave them more chances to try them out. Some weeks, I felt despondent that they just did not care at all and they were never going rise out of their funk.

At one point during one of the discussions, one of the male students Cullen said, "Dr. D, you are just the happiest person I know. You are always happy." He meant it as a compliment, but I could also feel him thinking, "All this stuff is easy for you. You just ARE this way." That night I went home and made up my mind to share my own past with them. I could not let them think that joy was easy and just happened to some people and not others; that it came to me naturally and they could never achieve it. So, like a true doctor I wrote out for them the Prescription for Joy listed below and I told them my story.

I came into class the next day, told them to hang on to their homework; we'd discuss them later. Today, we were doing something different. I asked them to sit in a circle and I reminded them of Cullen's comment from yesterday. I said, "Today, I am going to tell you how I became joyful." I told them that when I was their age, in college, I was in a very abusive relationship, much like the students from University of Virginia where the young woman was recently killed. Back then, I wondered every day if I might end up dead. I was drowning in the depths of despair. I am saddened to hear that a death from domestic violence has happened on a college campus, but maybe now people will wake up to the truth about dating violence in college. It can happen to anyone, and it does.

My college was situated in the heart of northeast Washington DC, in 1990, when it was known as the Murder Capital of the World (with upwards of 5 murders a day!). A man who lived in the apartment next to us was gunned down with a double-barrelled shotgun, while we were hangin' out one night. I constantly felt like I was in the crossfire of violence.

Years of living in constant fear and terror had wreaked havoc on my health, especially my adrenals (my fight or flight response), and quite frankly, I had not yet recovered. I shared more details from my life at that time and they got the point. At their age, I was stressed too, maybe even moreso than they.

I related how I've spent the next 20 years of my life finding ways to bring joy back in and that I am always searching. I explained that joy takes work, constant effort. Joy doesn't necessarily just happen on its own, though it certainly can, but it must also be cultivated.

For me, my daily practice of meditation has been a constant source of "prepping my soil," so to speak, for the potential joy, peace, happiness, bliss that are present in my life. But thinking back to my early twenties, I came up with the list at the end of this essay that I hoped might inspire them to find their own ways to cultivate joy too.

At I ended my story, there was complete silence in the room. I knew I had shocked them; they knew me as a professor, wife, and mom of two awesome children. I literally lived in a house with a white picket fence! They never imagined that I had come through such a past. I looked over at Cullen, and he looked lit up from within. His eyes were bright and he said, "Dr. D, that was an amazing story. I've got a lot more respect for you now." I thanked him and just asked that he keep my story in his heart. He promised he would.

Dr. D's Prescription for Joy
1) "Road Trip it": "Sometimes you have to journey out to journey within."
a. Go somewhere warm; see 'big nature.'
b. Drive across the country- twice. Sleep outside when possible.

2) Nurture your relationship with Nature:
a. Hike, bike, walk, kayak, ski, etc.
b. Be in silence.
c. Skip school or work & be in nature when no one else is.
d. Notice nature- even from your window.

3) Serve other, serve others, serve others:
a. As much as humanly possible, share your financial, emotional, physical resources with others.
b. Schedule it into your week, like any other event.
c. More than anything else, this will open up the door to joy.

4) CREATE/ENJOY music, the arts:
a. Concerts-iPod-Cds: Listen, dance, move.
b. Sing in the shower.
c. Join the world drumming ensemble- make music with others.

5) Play like a kid/ play with kids:
a. Ride a swing & swing REALLY high.
b. Volunteer with children.
c. Color with crayons.
d. Get a pick-up game of football, Frisbee, baseball together

6) Get healthy- stay healthy.
a. hydrate like crazy; ten glasses a day is not too many.
b. eat whole foods; eat something that looks like what it is called: fruit not fruit roll-ups.

7) BREATHE!!!!!! Learn to notice your breath & posture all day long. Take time to pause.
a. Meditate- fortify yourself each day like a daily vitamin.
b. Start slow (5 minutes a day) & then slow down (2 min a day); work your way up slowly.
c. Make it a part of your essential daily planning.

8) Go "Unplugged"
a. Go tech free for a day;
b. shut off your cell phone, laptop, iPod, etc. just for one day. See how you feel. Do it again.

9) More fun, less stuff
a. Give up consuming for awhile
b. Give your stuff away.

10) Take a fast from the Fast Lane!! Take a day off; schedule it now.

You don't have to be in-the-know. It's more fun to be in-the-mystery! The source of true joy lies within.

College Football - Swenson's Last Second Field Goal Lifts Michigan State Over Wisconsin

A great special teams player can win you a critical game when your offense is staggering and your defense is stalled.

Meet Brett Swenson, a 5-foot-8, 169-pound junior kicker out of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Pompano Beach (FL). He put his foot down in the Michigan State-Wisconsin game Saturday (11-1-08) with 7 seconds left and kicked a 44-yard field goal to lift the Spartans to a 25-24 victory.

Running out of time, the Spartans scrambled to set up for a field goal, but were helped when the Badgers called a timeout with 12 seconds left. Then the Badgers called their last timeout, hoping to rattle Swenson, only to watch Swenson take his helmet off, laugh and then make the field goal.

"The first timeout helped me because it gave me a chance to relax after rushing on the field," said Swenson after the victory. "The second timeout, I thought was funny because he was trying to ice me and I knew that wouldn't work."

Prior to the 44-yard game winner, Swenson kicked field goals of 27, 21 and 50 yards.

Without Swenson kicking butt and taking names, Michigan State loses a game it should not lose. With Swenson the Spartans log their 8th win of the season against 2 losses. More important, the plague of collapsing late in the season is now starting to become a thing of the past.

To say that coach Mark Dantonio's presence has not make a tremendous difference in the consciousness of the Michigan State University football program is to ignore Brett Swenson's confidence when he lines up to make a field goal. Swenson just might be the best college field goal kicker in the country.

When you compete for a spot in a BCS bowl game or a major bowl game, a great, reliable kicker is a key player you want on your side. In 10 games, Swenson has made 19 of 23 field goal attempts with 6-of-6 between 40 to 49 yards and 1-of-2 from 50+ yards. He also endured a couple of bad snaps and bad holds.

Michigan State was not on top of its game against Wisconsin and was not on top of its No. 22 standing in the AP Top 25 Poll. By winning, the Spartans are now ranked No. 18 in the same poll. Voters boosted Michigan State's fortunes because they recognize that the Spartans were 11 points down in the 4th quarter and came back to win. Secondly, they know that despite Wisconsin's 4-5 losing record, is the best 4-5 team in the country.

Michigan State is 8-2 for just the second time in 4 decades and will play in consecutive bowls for the first time since the end of the Nick Saban era in the late 1990s.

The Spartans host Purdue this Saturday and end their season on the road at Penn State on Nov. 22.

The NFL Dallas Cowboys are a fan favorite within the borders of Texas and well beyond. Over a span of more than forty years the team has entertained and performed for its fans at a consistently high level. In addition to their great success on the field, "America's Team" has been just as successful off the field and is considered to be one of the most valuable sports teams in North America. One of the most anticipated games played by the Cowboys each year is the Thanksgiving Day Classic.

The Thanksgiving Day game also known as the Thanksgiving Day Classic has been part of the history of the NFL for quite some time. Thanksgiving Day games are usually hosted at the home stadiums of the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys, with some exceptions. In 2006 the Kansas City Chiefs also hosted a Thanksgiving Day game.

The Detroit Lions are the perennial host of the event, having entertained a Thanksgiving Day game every year since 1934. The Lions opponent in the first game was the Chicago Bears who won the game 19-16. To date, the Detroit Lions have played in 65 Thanksgiving Day games. The only time the Lions have not hosted a game on this day was in the year's from1939 to 1944 due to World War II.

In 1960 the Cowboys joined the National Football League as an expansion team and in 1966 they hosted their first Thanksgiving Day classic at the Cotton Bowl. Since 1966 the Cowboys have hosted a game each year (since 1971 at Texas Stadium) with the exceptions of 1975 and 1977 when the St Louis Cardinals played host. The Cowboys were victorious in their first game in 1966 defeating the Cleveland Browns 26-14.

Thanksgiving Day, NFL football, and Cowboys football go hand in hand. It has become a tradition in the United States to sit down for a turkey dinner with family and friends while keeping one eye on the football game. For some fans, Thanksgiving Day revolves around the NFL's Thanksgiving Day Classic and their TV. Needless to say, there has been some classic Cowboys football played on Thanksgiving Day. The Cowboys won the game 24 to 23. In 1990 the Cowboys were again matched against the Redskins on Thanksgiving Day. Rookie Emmitt Smith carried the ball 23 times and ran for 132 yards, including two second half touchdowns, as the Cowboys scored the final 17 points of the game to defeat the Redskins 27 to 17. In 1998 the Cowboys were matched against the Minnesota Vikings. Randy Moss, the Vikings rookie wide receiver, caught only three passes that game but they were all for touchdowns as he finished the day with 163 receiving yards. Troy Aikman passed for 455 yards in the same game. Despite Aikman's efforts, Minnesota went on to defeat the Cowboys 46 to 36.

The Dallas Cowboys and Thanksgiving Day are inextricably linked. You can't have one without the other. Each year fans of the game look forward to enjoying their football with a side helping of turkey dinner. The Thanksgiving Day Classic has been around for many years - it is part of the NFL and Dallas Cowboys history. Indeed, the Thanksgiving Day Classic has become a tradition in endless households across the United States and North America.

It's that time again when all the so called experts in the media give their predictions for the forthcoming football season. As usual they will get the majority hopelessly wrong, but claim credit for the few blatantly obvious one's they get right. In the Premiership it doesn't take a genius to work out the usual suspects, but which order? I quite like the look of the 8/1 being quoted for Liverpool. Naturally Chelsea and Man U will push them close, but by the end I actually believe Arsenal might be their nearest rivals. Either way I think there will only be single figure points between all 4. Spurs will be desperately disappointed to have missed out at the death last time and their squad seems to get bigger every year. They should figure prominently again, but only as the best of the next little group which will include West Ham, Newcastle, Man City and once all the dust has settled Aston Villa. Plus hanging onto their tails I believe Reading will have a cracking first season in the top flight. They play the game the right way and will surprise many.

After that we're in to the bottom half and that's where I see Blackburn and Portsmouth finishing without ever getting sucked into the dog fight below them. The remaining 8 clubs will I believe all flirt with relegation, with the likes of Bolton, Middlesbrough, Wigan and Charlton all having much worse seasons than previous. I don't see any of them dropping out, but they may well have a few scary moments and I wouldn't expect them to be comfortable until the final few weeks. Of the other 4, Fulham always seem to do just enough, so that leaves promoted Watford who, whilst having a lot of pace in their side, look very suspect defensively; Sheff Utd who I think will struggle from start to finish - reminiscent of Sunderland last year and controversially Everton. I doubt if anybody else will be tipping the Merseysiders for the drop, but even with the signing of Andy Johnson I just don't like the look of them. Still even if I'm miles off the mark, you can't beat a bit of controversy.

In the Championship, every year the division seems stronger on paper, but the reality often shows so called "big clubs" living off their name and the truth is that any club who can put together a consistent run of results will be in with a great chance - i.e Watford last term! Birmingham look to have signed the right type of player for this league and their early favouritism would seem justified. The 3 losing play off clubs: Leeds, Palace and Preston, should all be there or thereabouts and I expect much better seasons from a trio of midlands clubs: Coventry, Derby and Leicester.

They all could feature heavily from the turn of the year and I'd expect at least 2 of them to be in the top 6 come the finish. Southampton too should make a strong challenge, but I can see Wolves having a bad time of it. I see their big rivals West Brom just missing out, unless they get off to a flyer. Plymouth, Hull and Cardiff seem solid enough, which is as good a description as I can give to Norwich, which won't be enough to allow them a sustained challenge. I'm not sure what's going on at Sunderland, but they look nothing more than a mid-table outfit to me. Ipswich have always been well fancied but I can see a difficult season ahead for them, likewise Burnley and Luton.

Sheff Weds should have a slightly easier time of it and of the 3 promoted clubs I think Southend look the most likely to adapt. Barnsley and Colchester may well be scrapping with each other come the end with the other 2 relegation spots being filled by QPR - who looked poor last year and maybe surprisingly Stoke, who pulled out some cracking results last time, but appeared to me to flatter to deceive!

In League One, Forest are everybody's favourites - everybody's except me that is! Granted they had a terrific run at the end and only just missed out, but I still have my doubts. The other team who came with a storming run late on get my vote and that's Bristol City. I've tipped them 2 or 3 times over the past 5 or 6 years and they always managed to mess it up somehow, but I think this could actually be the year they get it right. Joining them I like the look of Doncaster, who have some progressive ideas and a smashing young Manager. Huddersfield and Swansea ought to feature strongly, plus Tranmere and relegated Crewe. The 5 B's: Bradford, Brentford, Bournemouth, Brighton, and Blackpool are all capable of top half finishes. Of the promoted clubs I fancy Leyton Orient to do the best closely followed by Carlisle. The other 2: Cheltenham and Northampton may well go on a return journey. Gillingham, Chesterfield, Millwall, Oldham and Yeovil have a lower mid-table look about them, which leaves Port Vale, Scunthorpe and Rotherham who need a minor miracle as they have to start 10 points adrift.

Like any other season League 2 is the most difficult to call. So many times in recent years top 6 and bottom 6 are only separated by single figure points for the vast majority of the season, so picking the successful one's is a thankless task. I'm going for Hartlepool who were a little unlucky to go down, to bounce straight back. MK Dons will have a good go at joining them and Wycombe will be kicking themselves at missing out after their fabulous start and will want to put it right this time. Lincoln seem destined to finish in the play-offs every season but fail each time and a repeat can't be ruled out. I like the chances of Wrexham and Chester, plus maybe a little surprisingly Notts County. Grimsby, Darlington and Peterborough were all up there last season and should be there again this, along with Shrewsbury and Bristol Rovers. There is no reason why newly promoted Accrington and Hereford can't force their way in, they certainly needn't fear anybody. Swindon under Dennis Wise will be an interesting proposition and he could just galvanise them, but I have my reservations. The rest I see a long hard battle, with ultimately Barnet and Bury crashing into the abyss that is the Conference!

1. Alabama Crimson Tide

In the history of NCAA football, Alabama has become one of the most successful teams. However, have you ever wondered about the history of the team's name? Newspapers originally referred to the football name as "Crimson White." This alluded to the school colors. It later became the "Thin Red Line." However, in a 1907 game between Alabama and Auburn, the two teams battled in a sea of red mud. Thus, Alabama became the "Crimson Tide."

2. Penn State Nittany Lions

We are familiar with mountain Lions, but what is the significance of Penn State's "Nittany" Lions? It all began with a Penn State graduate named H.D. "Joe" Mason.

Mason became inspired after seeing a live Princeton tiger on its campus. A Penn State newspaper then sponsored Mason's quest to choose a mascot for Penn State. The school ultimately chose a lion, and it is most likely the first college to have a lion as its mascot. The "Nittany" refers to the school's location at the base of Mount Nittany. According to local Native American legend, Nittany (also Nita-Nee) was an American Indian princess.

3. Arkansas Razorbacks

Before they were the Razorbacks, Arkansas was the Cardinals. Students selected the mascot, due to the school's colors of cardinal and white. The name "Razorbacks" originated from a talk that the first paid Arkansas football coach, Hugo Bezdek, made to the students of Arkansas. Bezdek gave the talk after the school's seventh victory during the season. He observed that the team had played like a "wild band of Razorback Hogs." The rest, as they say, is history. Starting in 1910, Arkansas had a new mascot: The Razorbacks.

4. Oklahoma Sooners

Oklahoma has become renowned for its play on the gridiron. However, have you ever wondered what exactly a Sooner is? Prior to the U.S. government's opening of regions in the Indian Territory for settlement, Sooners were actually people who entered the lands illegally. "Sooners" first referred to settlers in 1889 who moved onto the Oklahoma Lands prior to 12:00 noon on April 22, 1889.

Dirt Poor

Brown is perhaps the third most common color in nature behind blue and green. It is the color of soil, trees and rocks, hence the saying 'down to earth'.

Traditionally, brown has been the color of poverty. As far back as Elizabethan times (1500's) it is recorded that the lower class were ordered to wear brown to distinguish them from the more affluent and privileged classes. Ever wanted to watch a football game online? I have done this many times with a service that is available that will allow you to watch TV on your PC. There have been many times that I was at work and checked in on games and game stats. There have also been times when at home the TV is occupied by either the wife for kids. I just pull out the laptop and watch the games online.

I love watching football and other sports online. I am able to get hundreds of channels online and tons of sports channels. You get all of the channels that you have now on your cable or satellite system, plus hundreds of more. Personally, I have canceled my cable and use this service in the living room on a computer. It works for the family, and we can all watch what we want on our own laptop. I love it.

Usually I will check in on ESPN and other sports channels during my lunch break, and I will watch games in the evening. Often times I can find some games on during the day like baseball and other great games that I would miss out on if I didn't have this service.

I did pay a one-time fee for the service of around $50. Now, keep in mind that you only pay this once, and not monthly like cable and satellite bills. I get unlimited access to hundreds of stations, and all are crystal clear. Sometimes there are so many channels and greats things on, I find it hard to leave it on one station. That is a problem I love to have.

My job requires me to travel a lot, so I now have a chance to watch all of the football games live rather than trying to get the wife to record it for me. Most of my co-workers are jealous because they are always asking me what is going on in the game. I just laugh and go on. I love this service. It is the best thing I have bought in a long time.

If you are a die hard sports fan like me, you will defiantly enjoy the service that I am using. I use it every single day, and do not have a single complaint. You do have to have a broadband connection to stream the stations, but just about everyone has either DSL or Cable internet these days. I use the DSL that I have had in my house for years, and it works perfectly.

How to Watch a Football Game - A Guide For Women

Men may call it football. But to you, it looks more like a half-off sale at Macy's.

Speaking of which, you can always go shopping while the game is on. But football season lasts a long, long time. And anyway, cuddling up on the sofa with your beloved on those cold winter evenings does have some appeal.

But if you don't know what's going on, and if your beloved (as so many beloveds do) makes it clear that he'd prefer you not ask questions while the game is on . . . what's a football challenged woman to do?

Well, we're about to tell you.

The thing is, learning the basics of football - that is, enough to make game-watching fun - is at about the same degree of difficulty as learning to send e-mails. Without attachments.

Okay. Get comfortable. Fix yourself some herb tea. Or a vodka tonic. Make sure you have a clear view of the television screen.

Now, pick a team to root for. Doesn't matter which one. Pick them for your own reasons. Because you like the color of their uniforms. Because one of the guys on the sidelines reminds you of your high school crush. Whatever.

It's just more fun when, as they say, you have some skin in the game.

But do feel free to switch to the other team if the one you picked is getting creamed by time the game is only half over. It's easy to tell when that is, by the way, because there's this long break away from the game with lots of commentator 'analysis' and many commercials that allow you time to refill your beverage of choice. Not surprisingly, this hiatus is called 'half time'. See? You know some jargon already.

But we're getting ahead of ourselves. Let's get back to the beginning of the game.

Things get kicked off by . . . well, by kicking off the football. Who gets to kick the football and who gets to receive the football is decided before the game by a coin toss.

After that, each team is allowed four chances (called 'downs') to move the ball a minimum of ten yards. There are white lines drawn across the field at five-yard intervals, so it's pretty easy to judge the distance. Plus when you're watching on TV, they superimpose this really cool digital line in bright yellow so you really can't miss it.

Anyway, if the team with the football succeeds in moving it ten or more yards, they get another four chances. If they don't, they have to kick the ball to the other team and allow them their four chances to do the same.

And that's about it for the format of the game.

To understand the action, you need to focus on the football.

You'll notice that, when the action starts (each piece of action is called a 'play'), the ball is sitting on the ground between the two teams. There are eleven men on each team, and you'll see that a bunch on each side stands in a line facing each other. These are called (all together now!) LINEmen!

Told you it was easy.

Anyway, the teams take turns trying to move the ball to the opposite end of the playing field. The guy in the center of the line (called, amazingly, the CENTER) tosses the ball backwards between his legs (weird but true) to the guy directly behind him, who is called the quarterback, and who is like the general of the team.

While the linemen on his team try to keep the guys on the other team from pounding him into the Astroturf, the quarterback attempts to get the football moving down the field toward the goal line (that is, the line that marks the end of the playing field).

He does this by running with it himself, handing it to someone else to run with it, or throwing it to someone else.

Meanwhile, their counterparts on the other team are trying to prevent them from succeeding.

But if the quarterback or his guys do manage to get the ball all the way across the goal line (called a 'touchdown'), they are awarded six points, to which they can add another point by kicking the ball between the uprights of the goalpost (you know what that is, right?) after the touchdown. This is generally referred to as a 'point after.'

If they can't get all the way to the goal line by running and throwing the ball, they can give up short of the goal line and try to kick the ball between the uprights from wherever they are on the playing field. This is called a field goal, and gets them three points.

Whoever has the most points when time runs out wins the game.

That's really all you need to know to watch a game of football. So go ahead: pick a team; focus on the ball; cuddle.

Did you ever notice while watching a professional football game, particularly when one of the teams has an aggressive defense that likes to blitz allot and pressure the quarterback, that eventually the quarterback while under pressure takes a three step drop and fires a bomb deep that goes about ten feet over the wide receiver's head. We cringe and complain as obviously the receiver had the defensive back beat and a well placed passed would have resulted in a touchdown, however, if you read into it more you'll realize that the play was much more than just an overthrown pass, it was a set -up play.

It was never the quarterbacks intention to complete that pass, it was his intention that after getting blitzed and pressured on every play to get the cornerbacks to back off a bit or pay the price of getting burned deep!

The play created the mindset with the defensive backs to loosen up or be beat!

Now the focus will turn to the stacking and blitzing middle linebackers and the inside pressure that probably has resulted in a sack or several hurried throws by the quarterback. Next, you'll notice that there will be a short series of quick passes placed just behind the stacking or blitzing middle linebackers. After a few of these completions you'll notice that the linebackers are backing off now and dropping into their zones.

The set-up continues. Now with linebackers dropping you'll see the play selection include several runs up the middle for reasonable yardage followed by a couple of quick passes to the wide receivers who run a quick slant pattern versus the defensive backs that have been playing loose, followed by another run play up the middle. With the quick slants the corners have tightened up to defend it, with the quick passes behind the linebackers they have loosened up, and with the inside run plays called they are playing safe, dropping cautiously and then coming up for run support!

The defense is now vulnerable!

The offense by selecting the right plays for the situation have forced the defense to back-off and made them vulnerable, they went from an aggressive attacking and sacking defense to one that is now concerned with being more defensive.

Bring in the play-action. Now with the defense on its heels which results in more time and space for the quarterback, chances are you'll see him now run a play-action pass for the kill. The offense will give them a run look, fake the hand-off to the running back as if the play is going up the middle, the defense bites on the run,and the quarterback will drop back and this time throw a strike right on the money to the wide receiver who clearly has beaten the defensive back.

A far cry from that overthrown pass earlier in the game!

Pro Football - Does Seattle Have Too Many Stars and Not Enough Football Players?

Whatever bloom was on the Seattle Seahawks football team has officially faded with the soon to be falling leaves of autumn. It was nice while it lasted. Fans were gifted with 4 consecutive National Football Conference West Division titles, a NFC championship and a Super Bowl appearance.

The apex of Seattle's rise to prominence was 2005 when the Seahawks went 13-3, won the NFC Division title, won the NFC championship and played Pittsburgh in Super Bowl 40 (XL for the Roman numeral freaks), losing to the Steelers 21-10.

This year the Hawks started the season with an eye on returning to the Super Bowl and winning, which would have given Mike Holmgren his second Super Bowl victory in his last season before leaving Seattle to take a year off. Holmgren would have gone down as the only NFL head coach to take two different teams to the Super Bowl and win.

Here is what Seahawks have done so far: They traveled to Buffalo and got their tails whipped by the Bills 34-10. They lost 33-30 in overtime in their home opener against San Francisco. They managed to beat St. Louis at home 37-13 (an almost turnaround). They took a bye week. They traveled to New York and got humiliated by the Giants 44-6. They spent last Sunday (10-12-08) losing to Green Bay at home 27-17.

I was at the Green Bay game watching the current mess called the Seattle Seahawks. After Green Bay scored a touchdown to go up 24-10 with approximately 11 minutes left in the 4th quarter, I got up and left with my friend. Thousands of fans literally got up and left with me.

After 50+ years of watching football games, covering football as a sports editor for a daily newspaper and being a lifelong fan, I can tell when players have tanked it in and could not come back and win if their life depended on it. I was right, they eventually lost 27-17.

Whatever magic Seattle has had in the past has gotten up and left the franchise. The Seahawks are terrible right now. They could get better but they will still stink.

Some fans think the Seahawks' demise is because of an inordinate number of injuries to wide receivers or a banged up quarterback Matt Hasselbeck who is probably lucky to be able to get out of a chair at the moment.

The team returned all 11 starters from last year's defensive unit, but someone forgot to tell them that they still have to play again this year. They are not where they need to be, they look dazed and confused, and even All-Pro, lock-down cornerback Marcus Trufant could not stop Green Bay's Greg Jennings from scoring on a 45-yard touchdown pass.

All of which causes me to ask a simple question: Does Seattle have too many stars and not enough football players?

Think about it. There is Walter Jones, arguably the best left tackle in the history of the NFL. There is Matt Hasselbeck, one of the best quarterbacks. There is Lofa Tatupu and Julian Peterson, two of the best linebackers in the NFL. There is Leroy Hill, who many fans think is as good as Tatupu or Peterson, and some think even better. There is Marcus Trufant, a lock-down corner.

At least 5 of these stars have big time contracts, only Leroy Hill, who will become a free agent this year, does not.

Noticeably missing from the 2005 banner team is guard Steve Hutchinson (gone to the Minnesota Vikings in a salary tiff) and running back Shaun Alexander (former NFL Most Valuable Player in 2005 who just signed with the Washington Redskins as a back-up).

It is easy to get caught up in the press clippings and even easier to ease up when you make big money. It takes no talent whatsoever to blow assignments. It takes a lot of talent to stay on top year after year, game after game, and play after play.

No one goes very far without talent, and some players do not go very far with talent. What separates the great players from the good players from the average players?

Consider at least 4 things: 1) Talent. 2) Focus. 3) Consistency. 4) A white heat, deep down burning inside to be the best of the best and ahead of the rest. If you have no idea what I am talking about, watch some game film of Brett Favre (pronounced Farve).

There have been more talented quarterbacks than Brett Favre, but none have been tougher, played harder or gone farther. The statistics tell the story, but there is no measure for Favre's heart, desire and pure joy on a football field. No wonder he cannot stay retired.

The Seahawks might need a little less of the "it's all about me" attitude and a little more of the "we are one" mentality. Teams win games and titles, not individuals. There is no sport that requires so much teamwork to succeed as football.

The Seahawk players-not the coaches or fans-need to decide if they are going to be a team of players with stars, or a team of players that wins.

Monday Night Football's Memorable Moments

Monday Night Football, because of it being shown in prime time, has long been considered the biggest regular season stage a football player or team can play on. During its thirty-six year stint on ABC, Monday Night Football became the second longest running prime time show in history, behind only 60 Minutes. Throughout its run, Monday Night Football has played host to some of the best and most competitive NFL games ever. Here is a look at some of the more memorable games played, as well as moments relived, on Monday Night Football.

The first Monday Night Football game was played on September 21st, 1970 and pitted the Cleveland Browns against the New York Jets in Cleveland. The Browns won by a score of 31-21 over New York and the rest was history.

During an October 29th, 1973 game between the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs, MNF announcer "Dandy" Don Meredith had been drinking and uttered the infamous phrase "We're in the Mile High City, and I sure am".

On November 27th, 1978 the San Francisco 49ers hosted the Pittsburgh Steelers; earlier in the day San Francisco mayor George Moscone and city superintendent Harvey Milk had been murdered.

During a Miami Dolphins vs. New England Patriots game on December 8th, 1980, announcer Howard Cosell broke the news to the entire nation that former Beatle John Lennon had been murdered in front of his apartment in New York City.

Midway through the December 5th, 1983 game between the Washington Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys, Howard Cosell referred to Redskins receiver Alvin Garret (who is African American) as a "little monkey". The commotion surrounding this event led to Cosell stepping down from Monday Night Football following the 1983 season.

On October 17th, 1983 the Packers and Redskins played the highest scoring game in Monday Night Football history with the Packers winning by a score of 48-47.

One week later, on October 24th, 1983 the New York Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals played to the first and only tie game in Monday Night Football history with score being 20-20 after overtime.

The famous 1985 game between the Redskins and the Giants where Lawrence Taylor sacked Joe Theismann, breaking his leg and ending his career was shown on Monday Night Football.

Later in 1985, Monday Night Football would be the stage where the unbeaten 1985 Chicago Bears, on their way to a Super Bowl Championship, would sustain their only loss of the season to the Miami Dolphins.

The Dolphins would again make Monday Night Football history the very next year when they were part of the biggest blow out ever on Monday Night Football. The Dolphins played the 10-1 New York Jets but defeated them by a score of 45-3.

On October 17th, 1994 Monday Night Football hosted a duel for the ages. Joe Montana brought his Kansas City Chiefs into a game against the Denver Broncos led by John Elway. The Broncos were trailing 24-21 with 1:29 left in the game when Elway ran the ball into the endzone from four yards out giving his team the lead 28-24. Joe Montana then took his team on a 75 yard drive ending with a touchdown with 8 seconds remaining in the game giving the Chiefs a 31-28 victory.

On October 23rd, 2000 the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets would again participate in a memorable battle. In the 4th quarter the score was 30-7 in favor of the Miami Dolphins. Vinny Testaverde went on to lead the Jets in scoring 23 consecutive 4th quarter points to tie the game up. Then, Jets kicker John Hall kicked an overtime field goal for the victory making it not only the longest 4th quarter comeback in Monday Night Football history, but the second longest in NFL history.

In an October 6th, 2003 game between the Buccaneers and Colts, the Colts overcame a 35-14 deficit with 3:43 remaining to tie the game and then win it in overtime.

On December 22, 2003, the Brett Favre of the Packers dismantled the Oakland Raiders by throwing for four first half touchdowns and 399 yards in the game resulting in a 41-7 victory. This game came one day after Favre's father had passed away.

On December 5th, 2005 the Seahawks shutout of the Eagles by a score of 42-0, tied the mark at the time for largest margin of victory in a Monday Night Football game. The game featured the Seahawks scoring three defensive touchdowns.

Monday Night Football has been host to some of the best games and most memorable moments in NFL history. Though the game is now brought to us by ESPN, football fans every where hope that tradition stays the same.

Building Chemistry When Coaching Youth Football

The best youth football coaches are not only very good X and O guys and great teachers, they are outstanding at bringing their teams together. One of the best I've seen at doing that is my friend Tony Holland from Baltimore. Tony has been using our system for the last 3 years and has had some amazing results. He has some very unique techniques he uses to bring his teams together. Tony is a voracious learner and has taken some concepts he has used so successfully in his business and applied it to his youth football team to make it better and improve the experience for his kids.

Laying the Foundation of Your Youth Football Team

Like us, Tony divides his team into multiple groups of 5-6 players. We do the same and assign a coach to each group and allow the group to name their little "team". By organizing your team in this way the kids feel more connected. When you are running circuit type drills and take a break, it is much easier calling out each group by name and sending that group to the next station. The kids often take pride in their little group. We've found when doing competitive drills or the fun team building drills from the group, the kids have more fun and effort greater when there is competition between groups. By keeping kids in those smaller groups, the kids connect quicker and deeper which in turn improves their fun and commitment levels.

Laying The Solid Rock Foundation

Tony takes this a step further. Before the season, Tony goes to Walmart and buys a bunch of small smooth round rocks. His team is the Ravens, so Tony spray paints each rock purple and puts Ravens stickers on each rock. After each practice the coach of each of the groups awards a rock to one player in his group who has listened the best and efforted the hardest. Each coach hands out the rock to his group winner before the entire team at the end of each practice. Tony said his kids go nuts over getting these little rocks. He calls the effort the kids put during practice as the foundation (rock) of success for his team. The foundation is built with the help of these strong little rocks that cost Tony less than .25 each.

Lifetime Lessons From Youth Football

These simple and inexpensive rocks are treasured by Tony's players. One player in fact was moving and mentioned to Tony he had put his treasured rocks in a box and made sure he got them to his new house. It was as if these rocks were his most treasured possession. He told Tony "I'm keeping my rocks forever"m which brought a huge and knowing smile to the lips of my buddy Tony. The teams parents even bought in after some initial skepticism and now are all for it after seeing the results.

Just think about this kid, 40 years from now in 2048, this same kid is moving again. He is now 49 years old and loading his belongings into the moving truck. he takes a look at that last small box from the attic. In that box are a few old scrapbooks, some old kids trophies and his little box of treasured rocks from Tony Holland, he got back in 2008. 40 years from now that player will still remember Tony and his lessons on effort, commitment and team work. How many other people are going to remember you 40 years from now? Think about that.

If you are coaching youth football, my good friend Tony is definitely one of the guys you want to emulate if you want those kind of permanent lessons ingrained into your players.

The offensive lineman is the unsung hero of any good offense. He is not always recognized as the hero of the game. But without him the backs can't run anywhere. NO line, NO scoring, NO winning. This tells me the better the offensive line the better the team. The offensive line is a team within a team. They have to play as a unit from left end to right end. They can and should help each other. They MUST work together.

The offensive lineman must have the determination and the mental discipline to practice different blocking assignments constantly. His blocks must be correct on every play and that can only be achieved through working hard everyday at practice. There are no shortcuts in this respect. You must practice hard if you want to get better.

Blocking is the key to any offensive game. Good offensive line play is based on a good stance, an explosive start, body control, correct hitting position on contact , delivery of a forceful block and driving your legs. The line must come off the ball as one. Explode with the snap, staying low, make contact, bring forearms and shoulders up and into his man, keeping his legs under himself and moving, driving his man out.

Remember he doesn't have to move the defensive man too far to open up the hole. You might have to move him left or right and you always want to move him back. To do this keep your body square and use short choppy steps.

What is the secret of the best writers know that most writers know? 'S with a great hook, with impeccable grammar or writing a great land? Although all these tools are great writers, are not available to write the second biggest secret.

The second greatest mystery is always writing to give their best effort. The great writers never give less than their best effort.

When I was in high school I played football team. We practiced for several weeksbefore the first game was played. Those who gave their best effort during practice usually played their best during a game. Those who gave halfhearted effort during practice usually gave a second rate performance during games.

Oh, there were a few players with enough natural talent to outplay most of their peers, but their skills did not improve during the season. By the end of the season players with less talent who put forth their best effort would many times outplay more talented Players.

What makes football to do with writing? Simply this, whatever a man sow. When a writer discs less its best efforts will never achieve its potential and deceives himself and his readers. Even with talented writers need to improve to become great writers.

The writers who strive to put forth will continue to grow. They are working on their weaknesses. If you have problems with the other character development, I will readwriters who excel in character development. If they lack in grammar skills they will continue to improve their grammar. Great writers know that constant improvement is necessary for excellence in writing.

By putting his best effort forward every time a poor writer can become a fair writer, a fair writer can become a good writer, and a good writer can become a great writer. Great writers always put forth their best efforts.

The NFL had a developmental league in Europe from 91-92 and 95-06.

American football history can be found in the early versions of soccer and rugby. Both types of games have origins in different types of football that was played in the UK from the mid 19th century, in which the ball was run over a line or the ball was kicked at the goal. American football as well as soccer is played with 22 players on the field that they play on. Spring is here, and with it the long awaited thaw and return of football. But before you stumble blindly into another mediocre flag football experience, check out ten ways to dominate the league this year:

1. The Pitch

If your league calls the ball dead when it hits the ground (and most do), you absolutely must take advantage of the lateral - it can turn a loss of yards into a touchdown. Every play, your players should be thinking pitch.

2. A Powerful Rush

Don't make the mistake of using "leftover" players as rushers. Instead, use your best athletes to rush - it will pay off. A nasty rush can completely neutralize a QB and demoralizes the opposing offense.

3. Adjustments

A flexible team is a winning team. Spend time planning so you're not trying to invent your strategy on the field. Here are some things to develop:

- A plan for an overwhelming rush (releasing blockers, quick passes, pitches)

- A plan for a team that doesn't rush (QB sneaks, two-move routes)

- A dominant defense (zone or man, blitzes, audibles)

- A plan to handle a fast, shifty QB (extra rushers,

Nine times out of ten a good scheme will beat raw athleticism. You need organization and plays. If you're not inclined (or simply don't have time) to create an entire playbook, try a site like Flag Football Ninja.

5. Simple Rotations

If you have a big team, game-time rotation can become utter chaos. Figure out an efficient, organized way to substitute players through. Avoid team politics by spreading the talent around the rotation instead of having your "starters" out first. A backup squad with no playmakers is useless to put out on the field at almost any point in the game.

6. Defense

Defense wins championships. Generally, teams of 5 or fewer should be playing a man-to-man defense unless the field is small. A zone can work with a bigger team. Every defense will have its weak spots, but giving the QB too much time is unacceptable. So send your rushers as often as you can, and use the blitz aggressively to keep the QB on the run. Also, a zone with completely fall apart if your defenders don't stick to their spots.

7. Timing

This, unfortunately, requires practice. But if your QB can master a handful of routes (or even a couple), throwing just as the receiver cuts, you can build a championship offense. A QB who can pair accuracy and timing can't be stopped.

8. Rhythm

Everyone wants to huck it deep. While there is much to be said for having some long plays in your arsenal, by and large, you will fare much better with shorter, consistent plays. A relentless short game will wear down the defense much more effectively than a few long plays, and successive completions batter the opponents psyche as well.

9. Experiment early

Regardless of how good your scheme is entering the season, you will be better if you adjust after each game. Each team has its own chemistry. Building on the concept of flexibility, try as many plays and schemes as you can early in the season, but by playoff time you should have distilled down what works best for your team. After a few weeks of regular season play, you should know what works and what looked better on paper than on the field.

10. Flag Pulling

Nothing is more important in flag football than being able to pull the flag. Again, nothing is more important in flag football than being able to pull the flag. This sounds dumb, but time and time again, short dump passes turn into touchdowns because of missed pulls.

Try the following:

· Don't Wait Flat-Footed: If you wait for the ball carrier to pass at full speed while you flail and swipe at the flags, you are setting yourself up for disaster. Instead, meet the ball carrier as early as possible, and move with the ball carrier while you pull the flags.

· Get in the Way: Most flag leagues do not allow (much) contact. That is why it can be especially helpful to stand in the way of the ball carrier while trying to pull the flag. They can't bull you over; they have to go around. This slows them down and gives you more time to pull the flag.

· Pursuit: If everyone on your team pursues the play, you will win more games. You'll have fewer breakaways because if one guy misses the flag, another is right there.

Ohio State Buckeyes 2008 College Football Team Preview

Ohio State's last two seasons ended in heartbreak with losses in the national title game. Two years ago, Florida routed the Buckeyes, 41-14. Last season, it was another SEC foe, LSU, who stomped Ohio State, 38-24. With almost all starters returning, I expect Ohio State to make another run at the national championship.

Junior running back Chris "Beanie" Wells is coming off a season in which he ran for over 1,600 yards and 15 touchdowns. Included in that yardage total is a 222-yard performance against rival Michigan. It stands as the best rushing performance ever for a Buckeye against Michigan. Wells also tallied 146 yards in the BCS National Championship Game against LSU.

Quarterback Todd Boeckman returns for his senior season. With Wells in the backfield and a veteran offensive line protecting him, Boeckman should have little trouble getting the ball to his favorite targets, wide receivers Brian Robiskie and Brian Hartline. Robiskie led the team last season with 55 catches for 935 yards and 11 touchdowns. Hartline wasn't too far behind Robiskie with 52 receptions of his own. Robiskie and Hartline must stay healthy because Ohio State has no clear third receiving threat at this time.

Defensively, the Buckeyes were nearly invincible last season. Ohio State ranked first nationally in points allowed per game (12.8), passing yards allowed per game (150.2) and total yards per game (233). They were also third nationally in rushing yards allowed per game (82.9).

Ohio State plays a 4-3 defense that gets regular pressure on passing downs and reroutes running plays to the middle where linebacker James Laurinaitis resides. Laurinaitis, a Butkus Award winner, has size, speed and all the intangibles. Outside linebacker Marcus Freeman has been second on the team in tackles (behind Laurinaitis) each of the last two seasons and I can easily see that happening again this season.

Ohio State is deep along the defensive line, which will allow them to keep fresh bodies on the field at all times. The secondary is also very talented with all four starters returning, including Thorpe Award candidate Malcolm Jenkins. Jenkins, a senior cornerback, will be joined in the secondary by fellow cornerback Donald Washington and safeties Kurt Coleman and Anderson Russell.

Ohio State should see improvement in their kick return coverage this season with the return of Aaron Pettrey, who was injured for a majority of last season. Punter A.J. Trapasso also returns. Trapasso is very skilled at placing kicks inside the opponent's 20-yard line. Ryan Pretorius, an accurate kicker, is also back for his senior season.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see this team back in the national title game for the third straight year. They have nine starters returning on both sides of the ball, including some All-American candidates. They also have head coach Jim Tressel, who has already won a Division I-A national title.

The defense should be fierce once again, even without Vernon Gholston. If the offense can sustain drives and limit turnovers (Boeckman threw 14 interceptions last season and Wells has a history of fumbling), then I can see Ohio State right back in the national title game in January 2009.

The Trap Play - The Giant Killer of Youth Football Plays

The mistake many of us coaches make is we stop asking questions or doing research once we get a so called answer to a question. Most of us take the easy way out, especially if it validates our preconceived notions. I'm here to tell you there are hundreds if not thousands of very successful youth football teams all across America pulling and trapping all the way down to age 6. I personally coached an age 6-8 team and we pulled and trapped very well. Not as well as Ross LeGrande, Ross is from Ohio and his age 7-8 team was the best looking trapping team I had ever seen. His team was the master of running the off-tackle and blocking back trap. In many of the games I saw of his Championship teams, they ran just 3 plays, the off-tackle, trap and counter and by golly the trap made up about 40% of their snaps.

Many of the guys that e-mail me tell me that the Blocking Back trap out of the Single Wing Offense, what we call "31 Trap", is one of the best if not the best football plays they run. Don S in Maryland averaged nearly 20 yards a carry with it last season for his age 8-10 kids. It is one of my all-time favorite football plays, yet many people think you have to have a bunch of Einsteins on your youth football team to run it. That is simply not true. I've seen film of hundreds of youth teams pulling and trapping well as well as have personally coached 5 different youth football teams that had zero problems doing so. Keep in mind, I'm the offensive line coach and I never played offensive line at any level and we probably practice less than you do.

The trap is a great football play for a whole variety of reasons. In our offense we like to double team block defensive tackles. We rarely have the size or athleticism on our offensive line to move anyone very well one-on-one, so we like to use double team blocks and wedge blocks. Once that defensive tackle starts getting moved backwards with double teams and wedge blocks, he starts coming real hard, real fast and real low, if he doesn't we are going to steam roll him all day. Once he starts coming hard, we just let him come through free and BAMMO he gets clobbered by a pulling guard coming out of nowhere and it usually means a huge gain for us.

SO WHAT DOES THE Defensive Tackle DO NOW? Should he play it slow and get blown back by double team and wedge blocks all day long or should he charge in real low and fast and get blindsided by a pulling guard with a full head of steam, hmmmm, quandry. This has been a great tactic for us when we play a team that has a very dominating defensive tackle that is eating our lunch, we trap him a few times and man oh man does he slow down, the brakes come on. Then when he slows down to "read" the play he gets steamrolled by our double teams and wedge blocks, what's the poor kid to do? He ends up playing tenative and our problem is solved.

Think about it, last season was there a team you faced that had a defensive lineman that was dominating your team? Wouldn't it have been nice to have a series of football plays that would have neuturalized him? I get sick of youth football coaches saying ONE PLAYER beat them, good football coaches figure out ways to stop one player.

Pulling is very simple to teach and is covered with 3 simple coaching points starting on page 218 of the book. Dave Rimington the former Outland Trophy Winner and College Football Hall of Famer said we were teaching it just right, he wouldn't change a thing. Our trap scheme is on page 167 of the book and can be run out of nearly every football play series you run. Don't exclude the trap from what you run at the youth level because you have never run it before or have not taught kids how to trap block in the past. The trap is simple to teach and is a very dangerous football play. The trap works better the better the team you are playing is.

Unlike the reverse the trap hits much quicker and can work against even very fast teams. The reverse has little chance versus very athletic teams that can run plays down. The trap hits quickly and gets the ball upfield much faster than any reverse plays, it is a low risk, high reward play.

Of course one of the caveats is do not needlessly waste football practice time on a bunch of mindless drills, cals and conditioning. Teach the kids how to play football well,how to block and pull perfectly, not be pushup or agility drill champions. The right football practice methodology and priorities along with the right football plays make facing teams that trap well a real nightmare to play.

Youth Football Quarterback Drills To Improve Your Passing Techniques

I am a former NFL Quarterback, and I have some great quarterback training drills to talk about today. These youth qb drills will help improve mobility, ball security and their response to various situations that come up in the course of a game.

Drill #1. Globetrotter

This is an excellent drill for ball security. Quarterbacks work the football in a circular motion around their head, under their arms, around their waist, around their knees, around each knee, weaving through their legs and finally "playing catch" between their legs.

The coach shout commands of which body part the ball revolves around--usually starting with the head and working downwards. Coaches also shout the command "reverse" which changes the direction the ball is rotating. This should be done numerous times.

The drill concludes with five 'drops'--the quarterback dropping the ball and then grabbing it. This is done with five drops with the power hand and five drops with the off- hand.

Drill #2. Toss sweep and option drill

Set up a line of quarterbacks holding footballs with the coach in the "Running/Pitch Back" position. The coach should be in a position behind and off to the side of the quarterback--where a running back would be receiving a toss sweep or an option pitch.

The quarterback faces away from the coach/running back in a position where he would be taking a snap from center. Quarterback reverses out and executes a toss sweep to the coach. (This simulates either a toss sweep or a quick pitch play.)

You then move to the other side until all have executed the pitch. Then the beginning quarterback again executes the pitch to the coach and all other quarterbacks follow till all have executed a pitch both to the right and to the left.

Now the quarterback executes an option pitch in the same manner. If the type of option your team runs has an inside or outside veer dive fake then this can be simulated in the drill by the quarterback. In the option phase of the drill the coach yells "pitch" and the quarterback breaks down and executes a pitch stepping towards the "pitch" man/coach.

Drill #3. Knee drill

Two quarterbacks start with their right knees on the ground, facing each other ten yards apart. One quarterback has a ball on the ground next to his right leg. The quarterback picks up the ball with his power hand, puts the ball to his ear with his off- hand also on the ball and throws it to his partner quarterback across from him. The partner QB catches the ball, places it on the ground and does exactly the same thing throwing the ball back.

The quarterbacks continue playing catch in this manner while the coach helps them with the finer points of their throwing techniques: leading with the throwing elbow, ball at ear and pointing first with wrist and then index finger upon release of the ball.

Drill #4. Three and Five Step drop and wave drill

Two quarterbacks start (one with a ball) facing each other 15 yards apart. The coach stands about seven yards from the quarterback with the ball. Quarterback with the ball faces the coach in an "under center" position.

The coach gives a command and the quarterback executes a three- step drop with his feet "chopping/firing" on his third plant step. The coach then gives visual directions with his hands (such as improving quarterback focus by keeping eyes forward) and the quarterback executes a wave drill moving right, left, forward and back.

The quarterback with very short choppy steps only moves 2-3 feet in the drill in each direction. The last command by the coach is to "throw" to the partner. The coach then turns around and executes the drill with the partner quarterback.

Key points of emphasis:

Stand tall.

Qb's must make a very quick in his drop and with his foot movement.

Make sure your head is constantly forward the entire time watching the coach. Once completed, the drill can also be executed for a five or seven- step drop.

Drill #5. Boot/Sprint out and throw

Two quarterbacks start (one with a ball) facing each other 10 yards apart but staggered so one quarterback is 15 yards to the right of the quarterback with the ball. The coach stands roughly equidistant between both quarterbacks.

The quarterback with the ball faces forward in an "under center" position. On the coaches' command the quarterback executes a bootleg, faking a handoff to his left, and then bootlegging to his right and throwing the ball to his partner quarterback. The quarterback who just completed the throw returns to his original position. The coach turns around and has the partner quarterback execute the drill.

Once the boot phase is completed the quarterbacks complete the drill using sprint out techniques. Then both quarterbacks move ten yards up field and turn around so they can execute the drill to the left side. This continues until the coach determines a sufficient amount of repetitions have been completed.

Drill #6. Throw on the run drill

Two quarterbacks face each other 15 yards apart with one quarterback having a ball. As the quarterback with the ball begins "running" towards his partner, the partner backpedals. The quarterback with the ball throws the ball to his partner.

As his partner catches the ball he now begins to run forward with the other qbnow back peddling. The qb run and backpedal as they play catch with the football until the coach determines a sufficient amount of repetitions have been completed.

Summary

In all of these drills the coach is working with the qbs on perfecting their techniques in throwing, executing a toss sweep or option pitch and establishing proper footwork. Special attention to the focus of the eyes and footwork in these drills will do a great deal to improve the efficiency and quickness of the qb's.

"Biggie" Munn 1947 to 1953 - Two National Championships and the Best Winning Percentage Ever

Clarence "Biggie" Munn was an All-American at Minnesota before replacing Charlie Bachman. Despite getting waxed 55-0 by Michigan in his debut, he quickly logged a 7-2 record in his first of 7 seasons. By 1950 Munn had the Spartan program in the Top 10 nationally with an 8-1 campaign that included victories over No. 3-ranked Michigan and Notre Dame.

He would put together back-to-back 9-0 seasons in 1951 and 1952 to go 18-0 and win two National Championships as well as National Coach of the Year Honors in 1952, beating 3 nationally-ranked opponents-Penn State, Purdue and Notre Dame.

In 1953 he would go 9-1, beat UCLA 28-20 in the Rose Bowl and push his 3-year regular season record to 27-1 and his 4-year mark to 35-2 (a 94% won-loss record).

Munn ran Michigan State's unbeaten streak to 28 games before losing to Purdue 6-0 in 1953. In 7 seasons, his overall record would be 54-9-2 (an 85+% won-loss record, the best ever at Michigan State) and he would produce 18 All-Americans, including the great two-way tackle Don Coleman.

Following his coaching career, the legendary Biggie Munn would serve as MSU's Athletic Director for 18 years, building the Spartans into a nationally prominent program. He was voted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1959.

"Duffy" Daugherty 1954 to 1972 - MSU's Most Popular Coach Wins Two National Championships

Hugh "Duffy" Daugherty became one of the nation's most popular coaches in the history of college football during his 19-year career as the Spartans' mentor. Daugherty was famous for his wit, personality and wisdom.

He became a great interview for sportswriters, coming up with quotes such as, "Football isn't a contact sport, it's a collision sport. Dancing is a contact sport" and "A tie is like kissing your sister" and "When you are playing for the national championship, it's not a matter of life and death. It's more important than that."

He was a guard and captain of his Syracuse football team, was an assistant coach to Biggie Munn when Munn coached Syracuse before coming to Michigan State, and followed Munn as his line coach. After being part of Munn's 2 national championship teams, he became head coach.

Daugherty's 1955 team went 9-1 and beat UCLA 17-14 in the Rose Bowl. His greatest teams came in 1965 and 1966 when he went 19-1-1, won 2 Big Ten titles outright and 2 National Championships. His only defeat during the 2 years was a 14-12 loss to UCLA in the 1966 Rose Bowl. He will be forever remembered for his monumental 10-10 tie in the 1966 "Game of the Century" when the No. 2-ranked Spartans faced the No. 1-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

No less than 8 of the players from the 1966 team were chosen in the NFL draft, including defensive end Bubba Smith, linebacker George Webster, halfback Clint Jones, flanker Gene Washington, offensive lineman Jeff Richardson, defensive backs Jim Summers and Charlie Thornhill, and kicker Dick Kenney. Daugherty produced 29 All-Americans.

Daugherty's overall record during 19 years was 109-65-5 (a 63% won-loss percentage).

He was named National Coach of the Year in both 1955 and 1965, and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1984.

After the 26-year run of Biggie Munn and Duffy Daugherty with 4 National Championships, the Michigan State football program pretty much went into the dumper.

It is true that after Daugherty, George Perles in 1987 would take the 9-2-1 Spartans to their first Rose Bowl appearance in 21 years, beating Southern California 20-17 to finish No. 8 nationally. Perles was the defensive line coach and defensive coordinator of the Pittsburgh Steelers "Steel Curtain" defense that led to Super Bowl titles in 1974, 1975, 1978 and 1979.

Despite turning around the MSU football program temporarily, Perles could not even sniff at the success of Biggie Munn and Duffy Daugherty. Since 1987 nothing much has really taken Michigan State back to the national prominence it enjoyed under Munn and Daugherty.

Michigan State's football fortunes are now in the hands of Mark Dantonio, the former defensive coordinator for Ohio State's 2002 National Championship team.

USC finished the 2007 campaign with an 11-2 record capped off by a convincing 49-17 win over Illinois in the Rose Bowl. Southern Cal ranked second in the nation in scoring defense, as they allowed just 19 points per game. They also ranked second nationally in total defense, as they allowed only 273.2 yards per game. Two October losses (home against Stanford and at Oregon) ruined their bid for a perfect season and national championship.

This season, the quarterbacking duties will be handled by junior Mark Sanchez. Sanchez won the job in spring over Arkansas transfer Mitch Mustain. Sanchez has started just three games coming into this season. The former National Prep Player of the Year threw seven touchdown passes and five interceptions in limited duty last season.

USC possesses a deep corps of talented running backs, including Stafon Johnson, experienced junior C.J. Gable and super sophomore Joe McKnight. Johnson ran for 673 yards on just 98 carries last season for a 6.9-yard average. He also tallied five touchdowns. Fullback Stanley Havili, a solid receiver and blocker, should also help the USC rushing attack.

Vidal Hazleton and Patrick Turner return as the starting wide receivers. This unit needs to improve from last season's performance. They should get help from Damian Williams, another Arkansas transfer, and Ronald Johnson. All-America tight end Fred Davis has gone to the NFL, leaving junior Anthony McCoy to try to fill the huge void left by Davis' departure.

Only one starter returns from last year's offensive line and that is left guard Jeff Byers. The good news is many of the new starters in this group saw extensive playing time last season due to injuries to last year's starters. Center Kristofer O'Dowd played extremely well last season filling in for the injured Matt Spanos. Charles Brown, Zack Heberer and Butch Lewis also received plenty of playing time due to starters' injuries.

Head coach Pete Carroll's specialty is defense. I mentioned some of USC's 2007 defensive accomplishments earlier. This year's group has speed and athleticism at every level and should also put up some impressive numbers.

All-America candidate Rey Maualuga returns at middle linebacker and former Rose Bowl MVP Brian Cushing returns at strong-side linebacker. Kaluka Maiava should be the new starter at weak-side linebacker for a unit that should be among the best in the country.

It gets even better. Coach Carroll believes this year's secondary could be the best he has ever coached. It all starts with 6'4" 225-pound free safety Taylor Mays. Strong safety Kevin Ellison, an All-PAC 10 pick last season, combines with Mays to form what might be the best safety tandem in the nation.

The biggest loss for this defense is the departure of PAC-10 Defensive Player of the Year Sedrick Ellis. Ellis, a nose tackle last season, is off to the NFL. Christian Tupou and Averell Spicer have some big shoes to fill in trying to replace Ellis. The rest of the defensive line consists of Fili Moala at the other tackle spot and freshman All-American Everson Griffin and Kyle Moore at the ends.

Both kickers, placekicker David Buehler and punter Greg Woidneck, return after solid 2007 campaigns. Southern Cal should get excellent kick returns from the trio of McKnight, Gable and Ronald Johnson.

In 2008, the Trojans will be trying to win 11 games and make it to a BCS bowl game for the seventh straight season. QB Sanchez will have a lot to do with whether or not USC achieves that goal. USC does have an easier schedule than they had last season. Most of the tough games are at home, including Ohio State, Oregon and Arizona State. I expect USC to once again challenge for a spot in the BCS National Championship Game.

National Football League: Say No to Thugs! Part Two

When a mom and dad notice their kids are turning into porky little chowbuckets, they often try to substitute healthier foods for all the Twinkies, cookies and potato chips the kids are tossing down their throats. Similarly, let's see where National Football League players get in trouble and recommend alternative, wholesome activities and entertainment for them.

1) Strip clubs. NFL players seem inexorably drawn to these establishments. The attraction is, of course, the varied and exotic creatures you see on display there. And in some strip clubs, they let you observe these creatures up close and personal. In others, you are asked to keep your distance, for safety reasons--yours and hers.

Substitute activity: visiting your local Zoo. Same attraction, actually: interesting animals, exotic habitat. But infinitely more educational, and the municipal Zoo has a much higher class of clientele for you to socialize with. I can't recall a single incident of a celebrity athlete being arrested at the Zoo. Once or twice, a Zoo visitor might get bitten, but that can obviously happen at strip clubs, too.

Substitute activity 2: take up ballroom dancing. Why just watch others dance around the stage, or the pole, when you can sashay across the floor yourself? And an National Football League player's athletic ability gives him a leg up, so to speak, on the other people taking dancing lessons with him. Just look at how proficient Emmitt Smith became on Dancing with the Stars. Though he's still no John O'Hurley.

2) Fights and other altercations in bars. Recently, even a Green Bay Packer, if you can believe it, got into trouble for allegedly pushing or shoving a female late one night in a drinking establishment. The alleged shover was starting linebacker Nick Barnett. (To be honest, I was not aware that shoving was considered a crime, especially after the times I have ridden the subway in New York.)

An unfortunate offshoot of this incident is now Green Bay Packer fans have to listen to the taunts of the Viking fans: "Dude, that was the best tackle Barnett made all year!"

The reason so many athletes have unpleasant experiences in bars is simple: excessive alcohol consumption reduces normally intelligent individuals to a level of thinking just below moronic, and aggressive tendencies that would normally be repressed, from fans and players alike, suddenly emerge. Small-minded people who are envious of the money and fame that accrues to pro athletes sometimes deliberately try to provoke the athlete into an argument. Provoking a National Football League player, who is paid to be aggressive, is never a wise choice. But as with NFL games when the Ref only notices the second person who threw the punch, the athlete often pays the price for a drunken fan's outburst.

Substitute activity: Learn how to cook. Becoming a skilled chef is a lot of fun, and allows you to entertain your friends at your home, and avoid the bar scene and its associated unpleasant situations altogether. You will have to go out to shop for groceries, but fans you may encounter are unlikely to become belligerent in the produce aisle. For the football player who is single, the grocery store can be an excellent venue to meet eligible females, who will be impressed that you know how to use ingredients like radicchio and broccoli rabe.

Substitute activity 2: watch Political Debates. Take out these aggressive tendencies by yelling at the TV when a politician says something particularly idiotic. Since both major political parties are chock full of nuts these days, the opportunity to vent your frustrations is nearly limitless. You may never feel the need to visit a drinking establishment again.

Or, if you listen to enough political drivel, maybe you will.

Illegal "Trick" Football Plays In Youth Football

There are a number of trick football plays that are perfectly legal and ethical to run in youth football. There are others that are not legal, but we still see them from time to time at both the youth and High School levels.

One illegal football play that has reared its ugly head again the last few year is the old "Where"s the Tee" or "Wrong Ball" plays. These are plays where the quarterback yells out to the defense that "we've got the wrong ball, I need a different ball" or "Where's the Tee, We need a Tee". In the meantime the center places the football in the quarterbacks hands and the quarterback slowly walks off the field feigning he is replacing the ball. All the other offensive players act like nothing is going on, but once the defense lets down its guard, the quarterback is off to the races. In the "Where's the Tee" version of this football play, as the QB takes off to the sidelines to supposedly get a tee that he has supposedly forgotten, the ball is snapped and another player takes off with the ball. In most cases with both of these football plays, the sideline is in on it and the "coach" is at the sidelines with a ball or tee and or yelling for the QB to switch out the ball or "come get the tee".

Not only is it Bush League it is an illegal football play.

Any action or verbiage used to deceive the defense into thinking that the ball is not about to become live is an UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT PENALTY, 15 yards.

This is the old "Where's the Tee" play that was made illegal many many moons ago.

Nearly all Youth Football Leagues use Federation High School Rules with a few exceptions of "Special Rules" that they all make very clear to their teams often in a mini rule manual. This manual covers exceptions to the High School Rules only. Unsportsmanlike Conduct is not one of the exceptions and is covered in the Federation Rule Book under 9.5.1b. Again, Any action or verbiage used to deceive the defense into thinking that the ball is not about to become live is illegal. Acting like you need a new ball or have the wrong ball or are missing the kicking tee are all illegal under this rule if the ball is snapped during said baloney.

There are plenty of ways to compete in youth football and for some, a trick play is something they like to put in. I'm not a big believer in trick plays, we are going to fundamental you to death and I don't like stealing practice time to perfect trick plays. I do however like to put in one trick play later in the year just to keep the players attention and keep them interested in midseason. We rarely run it to gain advantage, but as a reward to the kids, often as an extra point play when we are up a touchdown or two.

We do practice against the above illegal play in our defensive walk throughs and fit and freeze. But fortunately we have yet to see it in 15 years of coaching.

Youth Football Team Struggling For Funds? Try Community Sponsorships

Creating a youth football organization or team can run into some unusual challenges: where to play, how to get people to join the program, community involvement, funding etc. One strategy in overcoming multiple challenges is to gather local community sponsors. This article's intention is to give a couple pointers in extending invitations and garnering relationships with potential sponsors.

Make a plan

The first step is to make a plan. An old adage states, "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail." A plan will consist of some basic marketing skills. First, start with people that you know. Second, understand the benefits of sponsoring your organization. Third, make the call and close the deal.

Start with people that you know

In planning to get sponsors for your football organization begins simply as a list of people. This could be anyone from a CEO of a fortune 500 company to the local delivery boy. It is amazing how much businesses rely on social networking, and you are two steps ahead of the game if you have a name, or a tie in to that organization.

Also, try and expand your circle of influence in a variety of ways. Get your football players and their parents to join you in sponsoring efforts. This will not only help you expand your circle, but is an ideal invitation to get them and their businesses to sponsor your team.

Understand your benefits

Here is a lesson from marketing 101: no one wants to hear how much a sponsorship is going to help you...they want to hear how this is going to help them. The more that you hone your pitch towards their goals, and their success the more they will listen.

Take some time to construct your pitch. How would a company, individual, or organization benefit from sponsoring your football organization? Are there ways to promote their businesses at your games? Promote them on your football jerseys? Will giving to your organization help the community feel better about their business?

Make the call and close the deal

Before you continue reading, stop and ask yourself. "How afraid am I of asking for help?" If you are 100% afraid then either you don't believe enough in your cause or you haven't constructed a plan or pitch that is good enough. Start over and try again.

Now that we are ready to go lets start calling! Nothing will help your cause, pitch, or donations more then persistence. Realize that everyone is going to have their free choice. Not even the best marketers or salesman achieve 100% sales conversion. You will get rejected, but if you believe in your cause it will not deter you from trying again and again.

When ending your conversation ask for some donation. There are many styles of closing the sale. One strong tip is to avoid yes or no questions. Instead of asking, "Would you like to sponsor our community team?" Ask something like, "Would you like to donate with cash or a check?"

Conclusion

Remember that if you have a good cause people will join you. The most powerful thing that you can do for yourself and your team is answering the "why" question: "Why are you doing this?" The more powerful and resolute the answer is the better!

Football is one extreme contact sport. It may not be as fast or as furious as the usual racing games you seen but it definitely has a unique notch of action on its own. Both amateurs as well as professional players of the said sport can be seen donning this specific protective gear on before setting off to play the game. However, there are specific characteristics possessed by football helmets. They generally have a face mask, a chin strap, and even a mouth guard that comes as an optional feature.

All that have been mentioned goes the same with college football helmets. Apart from being just a protective gear, it can also be said that college football helmets are being worn for their aesthetic effect. Every football helmet comes emblazoned with the particular team's logo. This is essential because it helps coaches identify their players while on field and referees find it easier to record down playing technicalities while every one is out there on field.

College football helmets were not as complex as they are right now. Football helmets actually started way back in 1915. These old types of helmets are very basic looking. They are even simply made out of leather. They are also made with a flat looking top design which can be likened to the ones professional wrestlers have been using. Back then, the main purpose of these helmets was to protect the player's ear from any damages. From then on, college football helmets have also adapted this particular technical requirement for the games they have held. Nowadays, leather is not the main ingredient of college football helmets. It is now polycarbonate which is being widely used in making such helmets for football.

In addition, college football helmets have also taken into consideration the need for constant communication while on field. Football, after all, is a group sport which calls for much coordination within the team. What happened instead is that these football helmets have changed its design from flat top into a more oval structure. According to studies which have been conducted, this oval shape of college football helmets actually helps a lot in protecting the head from too much impact. Moreover, an inflatable bladder is also now being used to provide more protection for football players while wearing a football helmet.

Then eventually, the chin strap has also been developed as professionals felt the need to secure that these football helmets are safely held in place. So who really invented football?

AMERICA

The "Father of American Football", Walter C. Camp was a football coach and a sports writer and the one who invented football. His name became is legend in the American Football history. He took the rugby game to the next level and invented football. He borrowed term from the rugby game and applied it to football; in rugby, five guys lined-up and are called scrum; in football, he change the five guys to seven guys forming the offensive line, this is called the Line of Scrimmage. Get it? Scrum and scrimmage?

CANADA

Some claims the football is truly a Canadian game and it was a Canadian who invented football. Invented by the replacement for British troops entering Quebec in the 1600's. Canadian Universities then introduced the game to American Colleges. It is said that by the time America first heard of football, Canada already has their professional football league of sorts.

CHINA

Some say that football was invented by Chinese a thousand years ago. The ancient Chinese were said to have kick a ball back and forth for exercise and amusement. It is said that the English only re-invented the sport after explorers visited this far away land. So was it really the Chinese who invented football?

They say it all started in Rome. Romans started playing football quite differently at that time, it is said that they originally toss and throw the pig's head around staking a claim on it. They found it fun and engaging thus it became a sport and thus it was them who invented football.

ENGLAND

It was the English who invented the football, or did they? It has been reported that forms of football were played as early as 1200 in England. As evidence, they pointed out a game seen played in ancient Greece, it is believed to be the predecessor of football. But this game is said to be forbade by The King Henry VI and by the 19th century, it was split into two games; the soccer and the rugby. And because American football evolved from the rugby, the English are basically staking a claim on both football sports.

Setting Up a Junior Football Team

Are you thinking of starting a junior football team but are unsure about how to proceed? I have recently set up such a team for the age group of under sevens and in this article I will give advice as to what is involved in the way of organisation etc.

My name is Stephen Hill and I have a son who is six years of age. I have been taking him to train with a football team for the last two months. He is however too young to play in the matches for this team which greatly annoys him as he loves his football.

A couple of weeks ago the manager of the team asked if I would be willing to start up a new team which would start playing in the league next year, this team would be for my sons age group. I was very happy that I had been asked but did not have the first idea about how to run such a team. I agreed that I would run the team but stated that I would need a lot of help in the organisation of it. This manager agreed to show me the ropes as such.

The first thing I needed to do was to seek help from other people as it would be virtually impossible for me to do it on my own. I asked around the parents of children in my childs class and explained what I was hoping to do, I was pleasantly surprised by the support shown. I soon had around five people who were happy to help with the training and on match days.

I was now starting to enjoy myself as I was starting to meet lots of new people and was aware that I was doing something good for the lads at this school including my own son of course.

I then had to think about a venue or gym where this team could hold its training sessions. My first port of call would be the school itself as it is their children who are going to play in the team. The school seemed to love the idea and agreed that I could use their school hall once a week. They also seem interested in sponsoring the team, this is where they have the name of the school on the football kit in return for supplying items such as the kit, balls, goals and cones. This sponsorship is still being discussed.

Finding children to play in the team was the next task, this however was very simple and my son himself found a number of players from his numerous friends.

When we train the emphasis is on having fun. At this age we do not concentrate too much on tactical awareness but more on the enjoyment of the game and getting used to such skills as trapping and passing the ball.

I am not trying to suggest it is easy to set up a new junior football team but it is very rewarding and is a great way of meeting new people.

Football Terminology - Tight End Passing Routes

These routes and names being taught are according the West Coast offensive scheme (Seattle Seahawks, Tampa Bay Bucanneers, Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers, and San Francisco 49ers). This information is not meant to replace the terminology or execution that may be taught by a High School, Junior High, or Pop Warner coach. However, every single pass receiving route taught today on the amateur and professional level is derived from the same basic concepts. Therefore, I encourage you to implement these techniques because they will greatly enhance your route running ability.

Passing Tree Routes

Middle spot - Designed to be usually a 3rd read for the Quarterback. The most important coaching tip for this route is making sure you stop directly over the ball, 5-6 yards deep. Do not drift or slide until you make contact with the QB.

Drag - This is West Coast Offense terminology for a route ran into the flat. A big mistake young players and even coaches make in utilizing this route, is that they bow or round the route. This only makes the Tight End easier to defend. The key coaching tip on this route is to pick a point on the near sideline about 3-5 yards past the line of scrimmage, and then run as straight as you can to that point.

Stick - A simple 5 yard out. This route can be run various ways depending on coverage, but in this case you will practice this route if you are in man coverage.

Coaching tips:

- Get a good release off the ball

- At 4-6 yards past the line of scrimmage stick, plant and break the route with your inside foot and then run away from the defender slightly downhill. You should expect to catch the ball 3-4 yards deep.

Middle Cross/Flanker Drive - Another name for a 10-12 yard "in" route.

Coaching Tip:

- Make the first 10 yards look like you are on a Go or Seam route. At 10-12 yards fake an outside break, then plant, break, and cut with your outside foot. Once you hit your break, run slightly downhill. You should expect to catch the ball 8-10 yards deep.

Option/Hook - This route is designed to take advantage of the leverage a defender will give you. If he is playing out side you will break inside. If the defender is playing you with inside leverage, you will break the route outside.

Coaching Tip:

- Make sure you widen the defender at least 2-4 yards during the initial 4-5 yards of your route. This will create separation and give the defender an opportunity to commit inside or outside leverage.

Deep Dig - The West Coast Offense uses this route in 3rd and long situations. The route is ran similar to the Option/Hook but at 13-15 yards past the line of scrimmage. Like the Option/Hook route, you must get width in your initial 5 yards to widen the defender.

Shallow Cross- An underneath route designed to take advantage of Linebackers and 1 on 1 coverage. Make sure you get a good release off the line of scrimmage. Initially angle your route until you get to 4 yards deep, at that point give a little head fake like you are going to go up field, then break your route across the field. You will most likely expect to catch the ball where the opposite tackle will be.

Seam/Go - The foundation of all pass routes. The key is beating the man in front of you. Get a good release of the line of scrimmage and the first person to the 15 yard line wins!

Coaching Tip:

- Make sure you widen the defender at least 2-4 yards during the initial 4-5 yards of your route. This will create separation from you and the Middle Linebacker and give you an opportunity to catch the ball between your man and the Free Safety. You will usually catch the ball 10-17 yards down-field.

Middle Cross/Flanker Drive (Middle Closed) - In some instances when a Tight Runs a Middle Cross the Middle Linebacker will pick you up in coverage. Rather than trying to beat him across the field after your break, run towards him a good 2-3 steps and turn back the direction you came an run an out route. An unstoppable play if read correctly by the receiver and QB.

Skinny Post - This play works magic against a cover 2. This play is run when the Safeties are jumping the Flag route.

Coaching Tips:

- Make sure you widen the defender at least 2-4 yards during the initial 4-5 yards of your route. This will create separation from you and the Strong Side Linebacker, leaving room to run the Post.

- At 10 to 12 yards pas the line of scrimmage, take 1-2 steps like you are running a Flag, then cut, plant, break with your outside foot and run a Post. DO NOT RUN TOWARD THE SAFETY, he will light you up if you catch the ball. After your cut, stay in the inside shoulder of the defender.

In some cases you may feel like you are running a Seam if the safeties are tight together.

China - This route is designed to take advantage of Linebackers that jump the Drag route. The mechanics of this route are the same as the Drag, but after 3-4 steps into the Drag, stop and comeback to the QB. Do not reverse pivot or spin out of the route. You simply just have step, plant, and cut.

Deep Middle - This route is designed to take advantage of the Middle Linebacker in the Tampa Cover 2.

Coaching Tips:

- For the first 5-6 steps make this route look like a Shallow Cross.

- Once you get to where the play side Offensive Guard would be then break your route up field, and then sit and break your route at 10-12 yards directly over the ball.
Seattle - This is West Coast Version of the Flag route. The only difference is the angle after the break. In a Flag the Tight End will try to keep the route high towards the back corner pylon in the end zone. The Seattle route however, is run flatter after the break to try to get under the Safety. In some cases, the route can almost look like a 10 yard out route.

Flag - Designed to expose Man or Cover 2 coverage.

Coaching Tips:

- Make your break at 10-12 yards. Do not break your route too early. Make the defender think you going on a "Go" route for a touchdown, then break into a flag...

- On your break, cut with your outside foot, take two steps like you are running a Post, then break it back into a flag with your inside foot. After the break run towards the back corner pylon. Stay "skinny" and up field.

The "Football Playbook" Road to Destruction in Youth Football

This past week a frantic person called asking if I had a playbook for sale that could be used for a Youth Football team. They said that they had played High School football 20 years ago, had never coached youth football before and just needed a playbook to get their team off and running. They knew all about "drills".

I explained my book was not just a playbook, but a step by step process that included a small but very effective playbook section. This person told me they, "Just needed a playbook". I can guarantee you this coach probably will make every one of the Common Youth Football Coaching Mistakes Detailed on pages 27-33 of my book. His team will most likely be one that not only fails miserably from a wins and losses perspective, but whose kids won't have much fun and will have huge retention issues. I'm not sure how a playbook in of itself is of much value to any youth football team.

The coaches that call and talk to me with an open mind are those that are e-mailing me with incredible success stories at the end of the season. The coach from the above story and the like we never hear from again. Embarrassed of their failures I'm sure and following the "Playbook Path" to a disastarous season. These disaster seasons often lead to player and parent revolts and seem to be one of the main reasons most youth football coaches only coach for a season or two.

The playbook fallacy:

On the other hand, there are some coaches like KJ, BJ, DB, KB, GB and many others. I can tell right away after talking on the phone with them for 5 minutes that they are going to have monster turnaround seasons. These are the teams we will be talking about on our end of season Wall of Fame. It has to do with having an inquisitive nature and being open minded about learning. People that are successful in life are this way about everything, it is a process they embrace. They have a problem, they admit they don't have all the answers, they try and understand the critical success factors of the endeavor, they do research and they develop a plan that in many cases has been proven successful elsewhere in solving their exact same problem.

For starters most of the playbooks I have seen or bought have been nothing but a bunch of backfield action drawings with little to nothing said about the blocking responsibilities of the players. Many do not even have lines drawn for who the linemen are to block. Others have the blocking drawn up against a set 4-4 defense but nothing is said of how to block against a 5-3 or 6-2 nor are any set blocking rules given. Others have 150-200 plays in them, obviously a compilation of many different offenses. But these are football plays, not offenses, there is a huge difference. Anybody can draw up a bunch of football plays, not everyone can draw up an offense.

An offense is a set of complementary football plays built around a football philosophy with integrated blocking rules and detailed coaching points for each play. Most playbooks do not contain any of this.

Don't even get me started about first steps, blocking progressions, technique, position descriptions, player evaluations, practice plans, priorities, defense, special teams, implementation, fit and freeze, scouting, game day management, managing players and parents etc etc etc. The playbook is such a small part of the puzzle. Important, but a small piece and anyone that doesn't understand that is usually doomed to fail when coaching youth football.

Coaches don't get a playbook and think you're set for the season, even if it is my playbook. A playbook is no magic bullet no matter how great it is.
